Last year, I filmed a documentary with the BBC about hair and identity. With aim to highlight how the choice of our hairstyles can affect or influence who we are or how we are perceived.
We shot the whole documentary in December 2015 and it came out on air, in April 216. I am not going to lie, I did not realize how big that project was. Until the documentary was shown multiple times on TV, on the news, on BBC World and BBC news, and people started sharing it on social medias and really giving out their piece of mind about some comments I made in the video. Some comments were really encouraging and some were not so nice. But if there is something I am learning throughout this whole process of being on the online platform, it’s that there are going to be a lot of compliments and there are also going to be some very mean and rude people out there. So it’s down to you and how you decide to deals with those trolls.
I was very honored to be the face of the documentary, then when they informed us that we were nominated for an award, I really couldn’t believe it, considering the backlash I received on the video. Then I realized that in our category which was the best internet video, we were against ID magazine. At that point I thought “I have no chance”.But I guess I was wrong as we ended winning Gold and winning the Awards.Which I was extremely proud about.
